Despite popular belief, the song "Wellerman" is not actually a sea shanty and should more accurately be referred to as a ballad. A defining feature of the sea shanty is the back-and-forth between the shantyman and the other sailors, as most, if not all, shanties were sung as work songs on ships, in particular to help sailors get into a rhythm for certain tasks (i.e., pulling rope when hoisting a sail, swabbing the deck of poop, etc.) or for leisure.
